19th Century Australian Exhibition Stone Pine Bookcase, by William Voges of Surry Hills, Sydney, NSW.

This bookcase was exhibited at the Great Centennial Intercolonial Exhibition in Sydney in 1888, by John Baptist of 4 Baptist St, Redfern. It was made by the cabinetmaker, William Voges of 236 Riley St. Surry Hills. The bookcase is described at the bottom of page 71 & top of page 72 of Nineteenth Century Australian Furniture by Fahy, Simpson & Simpson. It is also referred to on page 129 of Australian Furniture Pictorial History and Dictionary 1788-1938 by Fahy & Simpson.

The bookcase comes with an Exhibitor's Certificate of Entry which is in poor, but very readable condition. It is very rare to find an Australian antique with such good documentation!

The rear of the Certificate states:

This Book Case was made specially for the Exhibitor by Mr W. Voges of No 236 Riley Street Surry Hills. The timber of which it is constructed is wholly Pinus pinea (Stone Pine) indigenous to South Europe and was obtained from some of the trees which stood on part of Bridge Street Sydney, N.S.W, formerly included in the grounds of the old Government House overlooking Sydney Cove, which was superseded by the present Vice Regal residence. They were cut down about 4 years ago being then probably over 70 years old. The wood is very heavy and extremely hard.

Very interesting provenance - from the estate of Jane Glad, daughter of Norman Lindsay.
