Large Antique Gothic Australian Cedar Bookcase
** SOLD **
19th Century Australian Cedar Bookcase, showing a strong Gothic architectural influence, the upper section with 5 open shelves and the lower section enclosed by two shield panel doors.
Family history has it that the bookcase was owned by Dame Mary Gilmore (the lady on the $10 note)! According to the family, she suffered from high blood pressure and heart trouble and was sent by her doctor to rest and recuperate in Goulburn where she stayed with the Sisters of Mercy at their Novitiate at The Towers between 1921 & 1924. The bookcase was donated to the Sisters by her in gratitude for their care. The bookcase was later given to the legal family in Goulburn, when the Sisters of Mercy closed the Novitiate, in appreciation for legal advice.
Very good quality, full cedar construction, re-polished approximately 30 years ago.
