A Rare Early 19th Century Colonial Cedar Bookcase
** SOLD **
A very significant and rare Early 19th Century Australian Colonial Cedar Bookcase, showing a strong Regency/Thomas Hope influence. Almost certainly made in Sydney - last known sale by Grace Bros Repository of Camperdown, Sydney 60-70 years ago.
Excellent quality, full cedar construction, superb 19th century finish with great colour and patination. Crossbanding to all doors and pediment, very good carving. Note the gadrooned edging to the top of the bottom section which is carved as one piece (not an applied moulding). The lower doors are flanked by well carved serpentine scrolled columns. The bookcase stands on reeded & turned feet with concealed castors. All feet are surmounted by carved scroll capitals.
The middle shelf is fixed and sits behind the mid-door crossbanded glazing bar, so is not crossbanded. The upper and lower shelves both have their original crossbanded edging.
An exceptional museum quality bookcase - one of the best early Australian bookcases I have ever seen!
