Antique French Bronze Figure Group on Marble Pedestal
** SOLD **
Late 19th Century Patinated French Bronze Figure Group, on a rouge and black marble ionic pedestal. After Pierre Lapautre (French, 1660-1744) Aeneas, Anchises and Ascanius fleeing from burning Troy.
This group was inspired by the Latin epic poem, The Aeneid, which tells the story of Aeneas, a Trojan who travelled to Italy. Here, he is shown carrying his blind father, Anchises, and followed by his son, Ascanius. Some scholars see the group to be representing the three ages of man. Anchises, the father represents the past, Aeneas the present with a mission to change the world, while Ascanius, the son, represents an optimistic future, full of potential.
Very finely detailed and in exceptional condition, the figure group 54cm high, overall height 165cm.
